Sarah Elize van Rij is a lovely creative girl from Amsterdam and I was happy to be spending a little time with her recently, taking pictures together, listening to Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ album.

All black and whites, bringing things back to the essence, the lighting, the expression, the atmosphere, a cosy apartment with nice garden in Amsterdam and a beautiful girl.

Pierre David ‘The Human Pantone’

Great re-design of the famous Pantone color chart by French designer Pierre David.

Instead of using the regular color tones Pantone is famous of, used by artists, designers, painters and decorators all over the world, Pierre David used the enormous variety in human skin tones to make his own version of the color chart.

These photos are a registration of a couple of hours that I spent taking pictures of the beautiful and sweet Rachel Tauwnaar, a talented musician, singer and model, in some old Amsterdam hotel named ‘Hotel Washington’. Together with a few cans of coke, chocolate bars, cigarettes and the sounds of Nina Kraviz and Burial in the background.

‘The Art of Nowness’

In samenwerking met Hotel Arena presenteert creatief platform PUP Amsterdam aanstaande vrijdag de expositie ‘The Art of Nowness’, een ode aan rust en stilte in deze drukke en chaotische tijden.

PUP zal een jaar lang curator zijn van het prachtige hotel en er verschillende expo’s organiseren en ruimtes vullen met werk van getalenteerde kunstenaars.

Deze eerste editie zullen fotografen Sanja Marusic (portret flyer / meer foto’s ook hier) en Sarah Wijzenbeek hun nieuwe autonome werk laten zien en videokunstenaar Eva van der Moer toont een video-portret van een gang. Kunstenaar Vincent Mock maakt van vishaken beelden van zeedieren die aan het uitsterven zijn. Daarmee verkent hij de relatie tussen onze identiteit als mens en onze plek op deze planeet. De expositie wordt aangevuld door de strakke, tot de verbeelding sprekende keramieken kunstwerken van Kesemy Design en illustraties door middel van een klassieke drukpers van La Farme.

Naja, typisch dingen die je moet zien ipv lezen…

De avond zal muzikaal worden ingekleurd door de jonge singer/songwriter Tomas Day en het duo Maya&Adrian.

Het verzorgingshuis op de hoek van de straat, ergens in Rotterdam. Daar tegen over bevindt zich een hoek, hij kijkt uit op een drukke kruising. Door de drukte en uitlaatgassen heen verzamelen zich dagelijks groepen mensen. Veel daarvan wandelen dagelijks de gangen af om zich te voegen bij deze groeiende troupe. Gemeenschappelijk is dat zij allen de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd hebben bereikt. Buiten dit zijn ze allen anders.

De taal die zij spreken is soms vervlogen en ruikt naar zoete dadels of sappige sinaasappels. Deze tongen zijn niet geboren tussen de Maaskade en Rijnhaven maar kwamen op de boten die hier aanmeerden. Ook de man zonder sokken en gaten in de jas sluit aan in een constant luider wordende processie van meningsverschillen. Dat de inhoud van de portemonnaie of de afkomst van voorouders hier niet toe doet is de winst van een gezamenlijke straathoek. Het recent gevallen kabinet is hier geen verrassing meer omdat deze heren allang wisten dat je ego’s opzij moet zetten.

Dat er deze mannen niets dwars zit blijkt uit het gebulder dat af en aan op de klinkers kapot spat. Mijn aanwezigheid lijkt dit gesprek ook geen moment in de weg te staan. Er wordt rustig tegen mij aangeleund, tot het moment dat ik bijna van het bankje wip. Onhandig sta ik dan toch maar op. Bestaat er wel zoiets als een open forum, wie schreeuwt er hier het hardst?

Op het ogenblik dat er zich een blanke, rasechte Rotterdammer zijn aantreden doet openbaart zich ook aan mij het onderwerp. Op geen enkele manier verschilt dit gekibbel van datgene waar de jongens aan de overkant over opscheppen. De vele veroveringen en hoe smakelijk zij waren. Vrouwen blijven ook na tachtig jaar de baas van een man zijn tong.

Doutzen Disrobes

The series show a pretty nude Doutzen looking super beautiful. Loving the black and whites.

Eric Antoine ‘The Ambrotypes’

Beautiful images of dreaming people in nature, people taking their time, just like the technique French photographer Eric Antoine uses to make the images.

The works are made using wet plate collodion technique which requires long poses because of the long exposure process, an almost impossible time-taking technique to use on location, for portrait photography, also because the plates need to be developed within very short time (10-15 minutes), before the plates dry.

Amazing way of working, couldn’t imagine doing it myself.

‘Images of dreamers and nature, nothing new, nothing sensational, just an intimate view of individuals in their solitude. Both this long process and the subjects are in opposition to a fast moving and easily bored world. A few glass plates against an endless flow of images. Pictures on noble material to be held in hands for more than a second. Long poses versus instant photography . Organic versus abstract.

All this contrasts with the modern era, and shows us how far we went, how excessive our lives can be.  What if classic romantic images of women and nature became sensational and rare?
If the process is not an end in itself, the user still takes a stand, almost political, by using it, a refusal of the speed of modern life that is.  Not only do I enjoy observing the depth in the eyes of a model focusing on her immobility, but I also see some sort of therapeutic method in this process, for the model as well as for the photographer  The day I moved out of cities in order to change my life, I naturally used more and more wet plate collodion to photograph a simpler life, still or not. It fits with a certain pace of life, its flaws and randomness illustrating perfectly an uneven, calm and lyrical environment.’

Brea Souders ‘Counterforms’

Wonderful mix of techniques in this beautiful series, a ‘search for her European roots’, called ‘Counterforms’ by American photographer Brea Souders.

Brea is one of the selected photographers for this years Hyères Festival International de Mode & de Photographie. (Really worth having a look at the other selected photographers too)

‘As an American with typically mixed bloodlines, I started this project to explore the many places in Europe where I have ancestry and their influence on me as an artist and a person. I created the very first photograph in this series, titled Sunburn in Naples, in Italy, in May 2010. This image encapsulated my feelings – a desire to own my Italian ancestral roots, to be wholly a part of something, but an inability to do so. The Neapolitan sun burned the Irish skin that I inherited from my father’s father. Upon my return home I continued my work, creating images that reflect my research into Christianity, art history, European history and family traditions, and my desire to connect all of the pieces together into one unified whole.’
